The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday said it was working two stolen-fuel cases involving the theft of a total of 8,452 gallons of fuel from area gas stations.

CCSO spokesperson Heather Yates said the first incident occurred on March 11 at a Beverly Hills Shell station, and the most recent on June 1 at a Citgo station in Holder.

The CCSO reports that 4,452 gallons of gas were taken from the Beverly Hills heist, and 4,000 gallons were stolen from the Holder gas station.

The March 11 incident occurred at 11:17 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Shell station at 3502 N. Lecanto Highway. The owner told CCSO deputies that he discovered the theft when he was going over the paperwork from a delivery of gas he had received earlier that Saturday. To draw off that quantity of fuel, the owner told the CCSO, it would take approximately one-half hour.

The most recent incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. on June 1 at a Citgo gas station at 7033 N. Florida Ave. in Holder. A look at the station’s surveillance video showed a large road tractor hauling a semi gasoline tanker. Although the color of the vehicle is indiscernible in the darkness, it looks very similar to a red tractor pulling a tanker that was captured on surveillance footage from one of the Pasco County gas stations hit earlier this year.

CCSO detectives made contact with both the gas and transport companies involved in the delivery, but no light was shed on who may have been driving the rogue semi. However, these conversations with people in the field did reveal that similar gas thefts had been reported in other Tampa Bay counties, namely Marion and Pasco.

Gas deliveries typically are made during a station’s regular business hours. In both Citrus County incidents, the tanker was there after the stations had closed.

“We are aware that the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office is working on at least for cases like this,” Yates said, “and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office has at least one case.”

Anyone who has information about these crimes is asked to contact either Det. Shelley Taylor or Det. Brad Smith at 726-4488. Their investigation is continuing, in conjunction with other area jurisdictions, to develop a suspect or suspects responsible for the thefts.

Also, anyone sees a tanker at a gas station that’s obviously not open for business should call 911 or 726-1121 immediately so deputies can look into it.
