Florida drivers trying to beat increases in fees for vehicle registration and driver licenses ran into a virtual traffic jam again Monday, with long waits at tag offices and frozen screens at the state’s Web site.
They were hoping to renew their licenses and tags before higher fees take effect Sept. 1 . The new state fee schedule raises — and in some cases more than doubles — the cost of getting driver licenses and registering everything from a moped to a 72,000-pound truck.
Tax-collector offices saw the number of daily transactions double, triple or more since Thursday, and the number of people logging in to the state’s Web site grew from about 340,000 on a typical Friday to nearly 874,000 last Friday.
