Lake County man’s wind turbine could help feed Florida’s power grid

state-wind_turbineJim Dotson made Florida history Monday afternoon when a crane tilted his wind turbine into the sky next to his hilltop home in south Lake County.

If the egg-shaped generator perched on a 35-foot pole works as Dotson hopes it does, he’ll be able to thumb his nose at those who say the state’s interior is a wasteland as far as wind energy goes.

He expects the spindly machine to power his house and feed leftover watts into the electric grid. In that way, though in a very small way, Dotson’s turbine will help light up Florida homes. And that’s more than the region’s utilities can claim when it comes to harnessing wind power.

“It’s cool being part of proving this can work,” said Dotson, who spent the rest of the afternoon and evening videotaping revolutions of the 12-foot-diameter blade. “If there were more of these, it would really help the utilities in Florida.”
