HAMMOND, Louisiana (CNN) — The woman who was denied a marriage license by a Louisiana justice of the peace because he refused to marry interracial couples said the official should lose his job.
Beth McKay said she never could have expected what she heard from Tangipahoa Parish’s 8th Ward Justice of the Peace Keith Bardwell when she called his office a week ago to officiate her marriage to her African-American fiance, Terence.
McKay spoke with Bardwell’s wife to make arrangements for the ceremony.
“At the end of the conversation, she said that she had to ask me a question. She asked if this was an interracial marriage.” When McKay replied yes, she was told, “Well, we don’t do interracial weddings or marriages.”
I support firing that idiot all the way. How dare he have that position.
The term “interracial” is itself racist. The term has no scientific basis and, if used, should be put inside quotation marks. Anyone who believes there are separate races is operating outside of scientific/biological facts. Humans are all part of a single race, are all genetically related, and the phenotypical characteristics pointed to by those who perpetuate racism do not indicate genetic closeness or distance. Terms such as “mixed race” or “biracial” are similarly reinforcing false notions of racial purity/racial mixture that form the basis for both genocide and the milder expressions of racism, such as the discrimination of the justice of the peace mentioned in this story.
For any J.P in a position such as his to not condone interracial marriages as he calls it is both illegal due to Superior Court legislation and racist in his own attitude!! I read his comment that he fears for children of this type of marriage and that made my blood boil, he may think he’s not a racist but he is just by the few comments he’s allegedly made!! Sack him now, he’s there to do a job and that includes providing the necessary marriage license for anyone wanting to get married (if it’s legal of course) and by refusing this couple he’s brought his own views to a job where his personal fellings don’t count!!
It beggars belief in this day and age that such forms of racism exist or are permitted to exist, another thing I find really offensive in this day and age of political correctness are the questionairres you’re required to fill in about your ethnicity when applying for loans, visiting hospitals etc. etc. !! However, I will say this when Denzel Washington refused to kiss Julia Roberts in the Pelican Brief his answer was that HE did not believe in interracial relationships and would never kiss a white woman on screen or otherwise!! Nobody then caused a fuss did they hm?! He was a star and could say what the hell he liked!!
Racism and this desperate belief that only pure racial blood lines are acceptable leads to the mass genocides we’ve seen in WWII, Bosnia,Serbia and Croatia as they are now and the genocide in Darfur now – until man can learn to accept that all men are equal on this earth regardless of colour, race, ethnicity, or religious belief then we are all doomed to live in a world at war with everyone fighting everyone!!
Why is this still a story? Why is this guy still allowed to act as gatekeeper against a valid marriage request? Where is Reverand Al? ( pardon the cheek)
Every time I get tempted to say that everyone is trigger happy with the race card, a situation like this comes along…it is completely mind blowing.
This is nuts–the SC has spoken very clearly on the matter and this guy cannot deny them.
I just read a story about a firefighter in PA who put a sticker of the US flag on his locker and has been suspended without pay This guy breaks a LAW and does so with apparent impunity. Unlike many cases these days, if this goes to litigation it is certainly a worthy lawsuit.
