School bus accident sends driver, four students to hospital

local-school_buses_genericThe Citrus County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol were called to an accident today involving two school buses.

The accident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of county roads 491 and 486 in Lecanto. The buses were from Lecanto High School.

Early reports indicate four children and a school bus driver were sent to local hospitals for treatment. Details are still sketchy, and the extent of injuries suffered by  students and bus driver is unknown at present.

It has been confirmed that two students were transported to Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness and two were transported to the Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center in Crystal River. The driver was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.

The FHP said one school bus rear-ended the other.

The accident remains under investigation.
