A Citrus County man wanted in connection with a robbery attempt and a homicide investigation, both in Inverness, is in Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg following a high-speed chase that ended near the Hernando and Citrus county line.

Citrus County deputies, along with U.S. Marshal’s special agents, spotted suspect John William Campbell, 36, of Inverness, heading northbound on U.S. 19, north of Weeki Wachee.

A high-speed pursuit started 4 to 5 miles south of the county line.

As Citrus County deputies deployed stop sticks, Campbell, who had traveled in excess of 120 miles per hour, intentionally veered off the road, crashing into a CCSO patrol unit, totaling the deputy’s unoccupied car.  The deputy was hit by debris, and was checked out and cleared by a local hospital.

Campbell was taken into custody, but was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg for his injuries.

Detectives also notified the next of kin (who lives out of state) about what they say is the related homicide from Tuesday night.  In that case, the victim is 68-year-old John Henry Campbell,  the father of the apprehended suspect.

Father and son lived together off and on in the family home at 3707 E. Nugget Lane.

The investigation is continuing.
